Day 1: Arrival in Dambulla & Cave Temples

After landing at Colombo International Airport, I was eager to experience the beauty of Sri Lanka. My first stop was Dambulla, a town renowned for its ancient cave temples. Before reaching Dambulla, I visited the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, a heartwarming experience where I observed rescued elephants being cared for.

Later, I explored the awe-inspiring Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Carved into the rock face, these ancient caves house stunning murals and intricate sculptures, offering a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s rich history and spirituality.

Days 2 & 3: Kandy – Culture, Spice, and Sacred Sites

Next, I journeyed to Kandy, a city nestled amidst lush mountains. An early morning visit to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a magnificent ancient citadel, was a highlight.

In Kandy, I immersed myself in the local culture. I visited the National Spice Garden, learning about the diverse spices of Sri Lanka and their culinary uses. A visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a revered Buddhist shrine, was a deeply moving experience. I also enjoyed a captivating cultural dance performance in the evening.

For dinner, we often ventured out to explore the local street food scene, savouring delicious and authentic Sri Lankan flavours.

Day 4: Nuwara Eliya – Tea Plantations and Scenic Beauty

Leaving Kandy, I headed to Nuwara Eliya, a picturesque hill station known for its tea plantations. The journey included a visit to the Hanuman Temple and the stunning Ramboda Falls.

In Nuwara Eliya, I toured the Damro Tea Factory, learning about the process of producing Ceylon tea from leaf to cup. The surrounding tea plantations were breathtakingly beautiful, with rolling hills covered in lush green foliage.

Days 5 & 6: Yala National Park – Wildlife Safari Adventure

My next stop was Yala National Park, a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. I embarked on an exhilarating safari, hoping to spot leopards, elephants, and a variety of bird species. The park’s diverse ecosystem and abundant wildlife truly amazed me.

  • Hotel: Hilton Yala Resort (Comfortable stay with easy access to the park. The hotel offered a range of dining options, and we were able to find delicious Halal meals. The resort is located near the park, allowing for easy access to nature and offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape.)

Day 7: Colombo – A Blend of Old and New

The final leg of my journey took me to Colombo, the vibrant capital city. I explored Galle Face Green, a popular waterfront promenade, and visited the Gangaramaya Temple, a beautiful Buddhist temple. The National Museum provided insights into Sri Lanka’s rich history and culture.

In the evenings, we enjoyed exploring the bustling Colombo street food scene, savoring local delicacies like kottu roti and string hoppers.

  • Hotel: Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo (Modern hotel with excellent city views. The hotel’s restaurant offered a diverse menu with Halal options, and we enjoyed the stunning views of the city from our room. The hotel’s lush gardens provided a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city.)

Day 8: Departure

After a final morning exploring Colombo and indulging in some last-minute souvenir shopping, I departed from Sri Lanka, carrying with me unforgettable memories of the beautiful landscapes, the warm hospitality, and the delicious food.

Tips for Muslim Travelers:

  • Halal Food: While options are limited compared to major cities, you can find Halal restaurants in most tourist areas. Street food can also be a great option, but it’s always best to inquire about the ingredients.
  • Prayer Facilities: Mosques are available in major cities and towns.
