Climbing Kilimanjaro has been a goal of mine since I was 11 years old.
I remember visiting Arusha as a child with my family and I have always wanted to come back to take on the largest mountain in Africa. Finally, I committed to making it happen.
The journey to the summit required careful planning and preparation. Here’s how I approached each step.
Finding the Right Tour Company
The first challenge was selecting a reliable tour operator. I spent months researching, reading blogs, watching videos, and speaking to people who had completed the trek. After narrowing down my options, I contacted several companies directly. Monkey Adventures quickly became my top choice due to their professional and prompt responses to my questions. Their attention to detail and willingness to provide information reassured me that they were the right choice.
I found Monkey Adventures very good and if ever I was to do Kilingmangaro again I would choose Monkey Adventures.
One positive thing about Monkey Adventures was that they were contactable via email and also WhatsApp.
Deciding on the Route
Kilimanjaro offers multiple routes to the summit, each with different levels of difficulty. After evaluating the options, I chose the Marangu route. It’s the only route with lodge accommodations, which made it a more comfortable option compared to camping. Having a solid roof over our heads at the end of a long day seemed like the best way to experience the climb.
When you choose this route, bear in mind the difficulty level is moderate however the summit day climb is probably one of the more harder routes.
Organizing a Climbing Group
Next, I gathered a group of friends to join me on the journey. To my surprise, 13 friends from the UK signed up for the adventure. To make the trip more manageable, I set up a payment plan that allowed everyone to pay over time. With the group confirmed, we booked our flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport.
We decided to arrive in Kilimanjaro 2 days before the climb which allowed us to rest and get used to the local food before we started the climb.
Preparing Gear and Training
In the months leading up to the climb, we focused on acquiring the right equipment. This included sturdy hiking boots, weatherproof jackets, base layers, and other essentials. Breaking in our boots was a top priority, so we organized several group hikes in the Peak District. These hikes helped us get accustomed to hiking conditions, test our gear, and build our stamina for the climb.
Make sure you have the correct equipment as it will make your climb so much more easier.
Final Preparations
As the climb date approached, we made sure to pack everything recommended by Monkey Adventures, including altitude sickness medication. Upon arrival in Tanzania, the company picked us up from the airport and provided a pre-climb briefing. We also had an equipment check, and anything missing could be easily rented from local shops.
The Climb: What to Expect
The climb itself was incredible. Thanks to our preparation, most of the trek was manageable. However, the summit night was the toughest part due to the steep incline and the challenge of climbing with limited sleep. Despite these difficulties, reaching Uhuru Peak—the highest point at 5,895 meters—was a monumental and unforgettable achievement.
One piece of advice: rent a portable toilet. The communal toilets can be unpleasant, and having a private one makes a big difference, especially at higher altitudes.
Key Takeaways
1. Research carefully: Choose a reliable tour company and communicate with them to ensure they meet your needs.
2. Select the right route: The Marangu route provides lodge stays, offering comfort during the climb.
3. Prepare with gear and training: Break in your boots, test your gear, and build stamina through regular hikes.
4. Plan for altitude: Take altitude sickness medication and familiarize yourself with the symptoms.
5. Consider a portable toilet: It’s a worthwhile addition for comfort during the climb.
Conclusion
Climbing Kilimanjaro required thorough planning and dedication, but it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. If you’re thinking of taking on this iconic challenge, prepare carefully, train well, and enjoy the journey. It’s an adventure you’ll never forget!
